Ireland’s best travel to compete in Lough 1Wall GAA Handball Showdown
There’s a top class programme of one-wall handball lined up in Loughmacrory this weekend as the club hosts its eagerly awaited annual tournament featuring some of the best one-wall players in Ireland.
Full and final draws with times/courts schedule can be found (PDF) on the link below.
Last year’s historic ‘Lough One Wall Handball Showdown’ at the newly opened complex was a weekend to remember as Puerto Rican Wally Amaro treated the large crowds to spectacular exhibitions at the unique lakeside venue to win the inaugural men’s open trophy, defeating Tyrone star Conor McElduff in a gripping final.
With the world championships looming in August, there will be no international stars taking part this time but the quality of the field is going to be exceptionally high with serious talent converging from all over Ireland to participate in the last major handball event of the summer before next month’s exodus to Canada.
Most eyes will be on the men’s and ladies open competitions and with recently crowned national senior champions, Conor McElduff and Catriona Casey, taking part, everybody will be thrilled with the exhilarating action that’s certain to be on offer.
In fact, the ladies open section has a very enticing draw as it will feature the winner and runner-up from the recent Irish nationals, Cork’s Casey and Down’s Lorraine Havern, plus the winner and runner up from the girls 19 and under national competition, Galway’s Ciana Ni Churraoin and Tyrone’s Maeve McElduff.
In the men’s open, Conor McElduff will be keen to follow up his brilliant success at the nationals but will have players of the calibre of Armagh’s James Doyle, Down’s Sean Digney, the Flynn brothers, Darren and Niall, from Longford, and national 19 and under champion, Monaghan’s Darren Doherty, to negotiate if he’s to go one better than last year.
The men’s open field is also packed with local talent, including Tyrone’s Gabhain McCrystal, Barry Devlin and recent county senior league winner Johnny Woods, plus Tyrone league runner-up Patrick McCrory and recent Clann Eireann mens’s open winner, Pol Clarke.
Overall, there will be more than 200 players from over 20 counties participating in Loughmacrory this weekend, with the opening games scheduled for Friday evening and all the finals down for decision on Sunday evening. In between, the action will be fast and furious, with over 300 matches staged from under-11 level through to golden masters.
There will be strong representation from all four provinces, with some of the finest young players in Munster making the long trip north, including the new national 17 and under champion, Cork’s Tadgh O’Neill, who will feature in arguably the hottest competition of this weekend as he faces up to some of the best up and coming players in the country, including Tyrone’s Sean Kerr and Jack Campbell and Louth’s Ben Devlin.
Kilkenny legend, Ducksy Walsh, fresh from retaining his national masters’ one-wall title, is another highly regarded player who will be in Loughmacrory and he will be favourite to retain his over 35 title this weekend.
All grades across the board are packed with talent from all around the country so the anticipated huge crowds are certainly in for a treat again at the lakeside venue. A total of 232 players will be competing in 2015 with 302 matches in total to be staged at the four courts from Friday to sunday…
Hospitality at the Tournament…
Loughmacrory GAA Handball Club will operate a dining area in the adjoining GAA clubrooms Hall from 11.30am – 2.30pm on both Saturday and Sunday providing FREE Tea/Coffee, sandwiches and refreshments for all players and Guests.
This will only be available during these times. From 2pm to 6pm on each day there will be a Barbeque tent where hot food, burgers, hot-dogs etc… will be available to buy. There will also be a Club Shop available in the Tournament Tent over the course of the weekend where Teas/Coffees, Drinks, Bars, etc… will be available for purchase.
