Bernie and Peter prepare for Dublin City Marathon challenge
This coming Monday 27th November is a Bank Holiday in Eire and for a few local people that will mean a trip to Dublin to participate in the 2014 Airtricity Dublin City Marathon.
This is a massive event involving athletes from all over the world and in recent times has seen many people from the community travel to take part in what is a hugely tough task but most impressive achievement when completed.
In this year’s event the Loughmacrory couple, Peter and Bernie O’Donnell will travel to take on the 26.2 miles of the Dublin City Marathon and both have been putting in major efforts ahead of this highly demanding challenge.
“We started trainning for the Marathon back in August, increasing the miles each week and I would also attend Omagh Harriers training twice weekly, on a Monday and Wednesday evening. Peter would run long miles on a Sunday morning and then do a shorter run around the lough on a couple of evenings during the week” commented Bernie ahead of this big test.
On the work it has taken to get there, Bernie and Peter are delighted with preparations and are now looking forward to the race itself.
“The children are well aware of the commitment that we have made to take on this marathon, indeed they quite often join us in training and come along on the runs. We will head off to Dublin on Sunday on the Omagh Harriers bus and we are staying overnight to be prepared for an early start on Monday morning! No doubt I will be glad to see the end of the pasta and rice this week and the water intake. It has taken a lot of training and dedication but having said that we don’t take it as seriously as others and we just want to cross the line and raise money for the Palliative Care Unit in the Omagh County Hospital”.
Peter and Bernie will join 1000s of other in Dublin for this massive event on Monday and what then once this major accomplishment is realised?
“A cold beer and a week of rest will be in order but I am planning also doing the Sperrin Winter League and Peter is aiming to get a better time at the Lough 5 race this coming New Year’s Eve.”
