Loughmacrory GAA Handball Club has recently completed a number of developments, including the refurbishment of the 40×20 and 60×30 courts in addition to the completion of a new Outdoor fully covered One Wall Handball Complex (3 full-sized courts) and will host our first major tournament in a number of years.
This is the first ever Open One Wall Handball Tournament organised and hosted by Loughmacrory GAA Handball Club. This event follows the completion of a new £1milion+ Development Project in the Community with a view to hosting major events of this nature in the promotion and development of handball in the area.
In the past, the club was renowned through the seventies, eighties and early nineties for hosting the McCrystall Open Doubles Tournament which saw the very best players in Ireland compete in an Open Doubles event initially in 60×30 and then in 40×20. Pat Kirby, Mickey Walsh, Tommy O’Rourke, Ducksy Walsh, Walter O’Connor, Peter McAuley, Tom Sheridan, to name just a few, are among those on the past Loughmacrory Club Tournament’s Roll of honour.
This latest new initiative by the club is to further enhance the promotion and development of the sport of GAA Handball in the community, while also adding to the expanding profile of the code of One Wall Handball regionally and at National level. The first event has already guaranteed the attendance of many of the top stars of the game in Ireland, including recently crowned Mens Open National Champion, Conor McElduff.
In addition the event will also see Puerto Rico star, a former US Open and current World Open Doubles champion, Wally Amaro, make a 4,000 mile round trip to compete in the inaugural running of the event. Over 1,000 spectators attended throughout the weekend of the Official Launch of the Community’s new £1 million development project on 28th June while over 500 spectators enjoyed a fantastic occasion at the finals of the Ulster One Wall Championships on Opening weekend. Deputy First Minister, Martin McGuinness and GAA President Elect, Aogan Ó Fearghaill were among the special guests at the weekend who tried their hand at the game in the new complex.
A very exciting, well organised event in a beautiful setting, with a guaranteed amazing atmosphere, is now set to take place in Loughmacrory on the weekend of 15th -17th August. You can expect outstanding action in a host of grades, which will see a new drop-down system employed in most grades, with great hospitality and a host of special additional entertainment value on show over the weekend, this promises to be a memorable Tournament weekend for all who attend.
