In Focus: Paula Donaghy, Revolution Fitness

Every week, on Friday, we will bring you a ‘People in Focus’ Q&A and this weekend we bring you a brief chat with Paula Donaghy, who opens Revolution Fitness to the Public in the fantastic new Gym overlooking the Lough, as part of the exciting new Development Opening.

When and why did you start out in a career in fitness and what elements attract you most to this career?

I ran (walked… crawled) a marathon for charity 8 years ago, with very little fitness or running experience.I vowed never to step foot in the gym after it, but within 2 weeks I was sitting with a brochure on how to be a Fitness Instructor… I had caught the fitness bug and there was no turning back.  I am attracted to a career in fitness as it is a very rewarding feeling to help people achieve their goals in health and fitness as well as allowing me to keep myself fit in the process, I was not cut out to sit at a desk i quickly discovered from my job in Queens University.

For people just starting out and hoping to get active, what tips or advice would you give?

For people who are just starting out I would tell them to try different activities, it can be trial and error until you find an activity that you enjoy and have the motivation to give it 100%. In the gym, there will always be a member of staff there to help motivate and encourage you and help you on your journey to fitness… a great Philosopher once said, ‘It takes 4 weeks for you to notice your body changing, 8 weeks for your friends to notice, and 12 weeks for the rest of the world to notice…don’t quit’.  Whatever your goals are, they will not happen overnight, but with the right activity and mindset, they will happen.

The fitness industry has exploded in recent years with many different types and phases of ‘get fit’ out there. Could you give some details on some you have tried with clients and which you enjoy and think people get the most out of?

In the past few years I have completed fitness challenges with my groups – such as Insanities, bootcamps and Operation Transformations, and each have had been hugely successful for all my clients. However the recent run 4 Fun sessions that I have been running down at the Lough have made my job so much more satisfying and has helped many people to run their first 5k or 10k mud run.  The group of people who attend are amazing to run with.  I love to bring out the best in them.  It is great to take people out who always wanted to run but felt they could not, and prove them wrong… every single one of them are capable of pushing themselves that little bit more… but without taking the’ fun’ element out of it.  It also goes to show that keeping it simple is sometimes the best way to get fit for many people and not trying to keep up with the Jones’ of the fitness world.

Your thoughts on Loughmacrory and the launch of this new Development project?

My thoughts on Loughmacrory and the launch of this new development project…. what can I say… I am totally in awe of the Loughmacrory community, it is amazing to see how a community has pulled together to develop this once in a lifetime opportunity.  The location in which it is set is spectacular, the people of Loughmacrory are so lucky to have this project in such an idyllic setting.  I have spoken to contractors and outsiders working on this development and they cannot believe what a hidden gem Loughmacrory is.  It may be a gem… but it won’t be hidden for much longer.  A great team of people have made this happen on their doorstep, they are an absolute credit to the Lough and I feel honoured to have a part in the future of the development.

What do you envisage for Revolution Fitness in Loughmacrory?

I envisage that Revolution Fitness will make the People of Loughmacrory stronger, fitter and healthier – ha ha! On a serious note, I would like everyone to know that Revolution Fitness is a place where everyone is welcome… this was an initiative by the people for the people. We want to make the gym a huge success for everyone, make it something for you to be proud to have in the centre of your wee community. We will have something that will hopefully cater for everyone and are always open to suggestions.
